The second book in the Great Pacific series does not fail to deliver action, adventute and intrigue. It also delivers plenty to think about in terms of what politics really is and how humanity gets things accomplished.
Like many recent Image books, the first volume was so busy with the elevator pitch that I couldn't tell whether I liked the comic or not, so I had to give it a second chance. And the answer is no, I don't. Too much of the book is involved with political speechifying and undigested minutiae, yet the end result is massively implausible - so basically the same as The West Wing, which I didn't like first time around (although at least this take has biomechanical piranhas). And at the heart of it all...
Much less convoluted than the first book. Nation Building really felt like it has a purpose.Chas still feels a bit shallow but he probably really is just an opportunistic jerk who just happens to do the right thing (sometimes). By now I really like the series and will continue reading it, something I wasn't sure about after Trashed.
2.5 stars
More than a year after the founding g of New Texas, the population has grown and things are starting to resemble some what of a functioning society. Now, Chas is on a mission to do what it takes to get New Texas recognized no matter the costs. The concept is what makes me wanting to continue reading this. The idea of oil funded rich boy turned environmentalist is great but the way he approaches things is just so unrealistic for his age. If we are going off the first couple of pages of volume one...
Stronger than Vol. 1, I find myself drawn further in
The promise begins to pay off.
Marginally more enjoyable, but I still really hate the central character and I’m not sure this was ever the intention of the writer. I’m still wanting him to fail, even when the admittedly higher stakes and better plotting make the book more engaging. More baby octopuses at the end kind of feel like a bit of a desperate ploy… when the book is flailing go for that one thing people liked about the last one
I was a little bit confused at times, but overall I really enjoyed this second volume. Loved some of the revelations near the end, and am excited to see how all the scheming and developing plotlines will play out in later volumes.
I really like this series. I like the character of Chas Worthington and how he's always got a master plan that doesn't get revealed until it's in motion. Eighteen months have passed since volume one. New Texas is now a burgeoning new colony with people looking to start anew while Worthington grasps for recognition of his country set on the great garbage patch in the Pacific. I hope Harris is able to come up with a satisfying conclusion with only one volume left.
Intriguing sci-fi, relevant geopolitics, social commentary, well-written dialogue, suspense, and action...a great series.
So complex and so good....https://youtu.be/PAoNGpwDsjw
Still just okay, not spectacular but not annoying either. So I will keep reading
