This is a collection of 11 essays, all written by Roman Catholic literary scholars, and all but the first one focusing on a single major 19th-century American writer or, in one case, group of writers. The aim of the contributors is to assess how congruent the thought of the writers treated was with traditional Catholic theology and philosophy, and the unifying thesis is that in most cases the congruence is greater than most standard treatments up to that time had realized.
