A distinctly Borgesian story: in size (short), in the amount of detail (copious), in quality and idea (subversive of reality, yet tethered to it).Vincent Degraël had scarcely begun to read it before he felt an uncanny sensation he could not precisely define, but which only grew as he turned the pages with an ever unsteadier hand: it was as if the sentences before his eyes were suddenly familiar, started to remind him irresistibly of something, as if on the reading of each one was imposed, or rat...
(2001 edition of the Atlas Anti-Classic)
Perfecta.
There is nothing more fun than reading a literary work that is about books. Or the idea of books, and how it can lead to an adventure. The OULIPO group that was originally formed by Raymond Queneau is such a group that reads and writes book that becomes a game or even an quasi-science project. Georges Perec is considered the Shakespeare of the group, and therefore he leads the race with this specific book "Winter Journeys." Which, in return has caused a series of little books by writers in the O...
A collection of related stories written by associates of the Oulipo - that group of formalist experimenters in literature. The first, eponymous, story is by Georges Perec, and each subsequent stories builds off that, and sometimes also off the other stories too. These shorts are, clearly, highly referential, they are often recursive (writing about writing (about writing...)), and many are written in a pseudo-academic style, which I guess is in the nature of the exercise's conceit.Broadly, the st...
Story featured in 'Species of Spaces and Other Pieces'.
:)
a few years before his death in 1982, french novelist and notable oulipian georges perec published "le voyage d'hiver," a short story wherein a literature teacher discovers a slim book that may well rewrite the entire course of french literary history: hugo vernier's the winter journey. whereupon first glance vernier's work appears to borrow quite liberally from the likes of lautréamont, verlaine, mallarmé, rimbaud, and a host of others, it is, in fact, they that appropriated vernier - as his bo...
Ne garip Georges Perec olmak. Eminim çok eğlenceliymiştir.
In 1939, visiting a mansion on the outskirts of Le Havre in northern France, the home to parents of one of his colleagues, a young literature instructor by the name of Vincent Degraël happens upon a slim volume in the library - The Winter Journey by Hugo Venier. The Winter Journey is also the title of this Georges Perec six-pager reminiscent of a tale by Jorge Luis Borges or Italo Calvino. On the beginning pages of the slender book Degraël located in the mansion's library, the first-person narra...
Me fascinó.
Beautiful. Quite stylistic and clever. Implicit metafictional reading. J’ai adoré.
