Alfons Maria Mucha, better known as Alphonse Mucha, was a popular Czech painter and decorative artist who established himself as a leader in the Art Nouveau style of art. He is best remembered for his posters depicting beautiful women in flowing gowns surrounded by floral designs and patterns. However, he also created many paintings, book illustrations, stage sets and designs for the household.
Mucha was born in 1860 in the town of Ivanice, Moravia. He first rose to fame in Paris when he was commissioned to create a poster for a performance of 'Gismonda' starring actress Sarah Bernhardt in 1894. When she saw this outstanding work she made Mucha an offer to work on stage and costume designs as well as posters for herself. Following this he agreed to also create posters for the printer Champenois and in the 10 years that followed Mucha rose to fame and affluence as an artist in Paris.
