Wasn't a huge fan of Shaw's Cosplayers, but this little collection really tickled me.The interaction between the comics with the background imagery seemed to veer between random and poignant, which perhaps should be annoying, but never was.The second story, an adaptation of a Girls Gone Wild video, made me uncomfortable, so that's good.
Since the release of 'Bottomless Belly Button' in 2008 I'm a big fan of Dash Shaw. When "3 New Stories" was solicited in the Previews I ordered it (along with his new graphic novel "New School") without looking at the page count or the price. It was a surprise to see he released a floppy-sized comic. The content didn't disappoint : Like always Shaw delivers intriguing narratives, meanwhile exploring the boundaries of the medium.
I never really laugh out loud but I hackled pretty hard on the first story, when it came to the dog subplot. I think I'm really in love with Dash Shaw's work. He's a smart funny guy but he's also not trying too hard. Chill intelligence is my favorite.
I really enjoyed these stories. the only other book I've read by Shaw was New School. I found these stories to be in a similar vein but benefited from the shorter length. I'm definitely going to seek out more by Shaw based on the strength of this small volume.Update: Just re-read this today. I've read a lot of Shaw in the past year. He's one of my favourite current cartoonists. His stories make me feel really strange due to their inherent surrealism. Very effective.
Awful. The only good thing I can say is that it was short.
