Kate is nearly failing her senior year of school. When her father comes home drunk early one morning and destroys her term paper, she feels like quitting. Her English teacher will not let her, though. She offers Kate an alternate assignment: She asks Kate to do an interview. To spite her father, Kate interviews the bum who lives in the park. She expects very little from this man but gets an incredible story of his adventures as a sniper in the Navy SEALs.
Kate is not sure how much of his story is true until he gives her an idol which he stole from some native people in Ecuador, He asks her to return it and tell them he is sorry.
Kate considers his request but decides to decline it. However, when she returns to the park late one night, she finds the bum missing and the park swarming with men who are looking for something.
Kate and her boyfriend Jeff flee their home on a mission to return the stolen idol. Along the way, they are chased by a government official and a university professor who want the idol at any cost.
