Poetry created by trawling search engines and running phrases through multiple online translations. Sounds weird? It is weird. Heikkinen's poetry (translated seamlessly by Pollari, also a poet) is incredibly imaginative, conjuring up stark and unusual imagery.
I guess it's been about a year since I snagged a copy off translator Niina Pollari (who I know through a (literally) distant acquaintance) in a cafe in Brooklyn. I kept picking it up and putting it back down in between other books, and now I'm in a Starbucks under the strains of their radio playing Elliott Smith over the disconcerting undercurrent of a schizophrenic conversation held between a white-steel-wool-bearded, sunglassed gentleman and himself.
