I feel, the obvious stand out in Liz Grzyb latest anthology Dreaming of Djinn is, without question, Oleander: An Ottoman tale by Anthony Panegyres. I found myself transported to a world of flying carpets, while my imagination was treated to the exotic smells and sounds of an ancient seaside marketplace. The author has woven a touch of mystery and a tantalising romance into the story which held me in its grip until the final word.
The anthology Dreaming of Djiin edited by Liz Grzyb is inspired by the Arabian Nights mythology, tales and folklore.Particular favourites include On a Crooked Leg Lightly by Alan Baxter, a tale of princess would-be assassins willing to escape societal control at any cost. The Quiet Realm of the Dark Queen by Jenny Blackford is a beautiful weaving of Mesopotamian myth and legend with a feminist edge. I know, an author reviewing their own book is dodgy, but with "Dreaming of Djinn" I'm only one of many, way more talented authors. This anthology of short stories that range from fairytales to science fiction rocks. The tone is really varied. This is the romaticised, roguish, Middle-East that we all love. This is Arabian Nights, but how we'd like to see it in a more fleshed out fashion. What a variety too! Some romantic, some haunting, and many musical and gastronomical delights.
