Nice short story about sibling rivalry and the bond between siblings. Enjoyed it.
I prefer the other books by the author as I like to get to know the characters these stories were too short.
I am greek, living in Greece, so the atmosphere of the stories was pretty familliar to me. However, I was really disapointed, I didn't like the book!
All The Kafenion really has going for it is atmosphere. Hislop has a huge talent when it comes to evoking Greece, particularly through tastes and textures, but this bite-sized morsel is too minuscule for substance. In it, we encounter twins with wildly differing ideas over business ownership, to the point that their mother performs a King Solomon and splits the family kafenion down the middle. There's a fable-like quality to it, and it fulfilled its purpose for me in occupying the last twenty min...
The Kafenion has been run by two generations of the same family so far. But when twin sons take it over they are in competition with each other. Can anyone persuade the brothers to work together rather than against each other? This is a charming short story which is a satisfying quick read with a moral to it, though the moral is not overdone. Recommended if you like short stories and/or Victoria Hislop.
Very short but very enjoyable - will certainly read other books by the author.
Unsurewhat I read was well written but I am not really one for short stories. I was left wondering if this story continues or if the focus was the moral.
A lovely, quick, easy and enjoyable read! Loved it.
I had no idea this was a short story, so the sudden ending came as quite a surprise, but it really made me want to read more by Victoria Hislop. (Yes! Ian's wife!) While you aren't blown away by dreamy, beautiful language, she is an honest to goodness story teller. The story is set in Crete, and she gives you a vivid picture of what the Kafenion looks like, and what it must feel like to sit there and enjoy your afternoon. I'm really excited about discovering this and I'm off to find more!
I was a bit disappointed really. I haven't read anything by Victoria Hislop before but I'd heard good reports. In this story, there seemed to be a lot of build-up and not much in the way of action. I can't quite put my finger on it but I just didn't find it moved along satisfactorily, and the ending was too abrupt for my liking.
3.5 stars- short but sweet.
This story reminds me of one of Aesop's Fables read to me when I was a child. The Kafenion wasn't for me as I prefer my reading to have substance even for a short story. It was rather juvenile.
An enjoyable short story which evokes Greece well. The characters are believable and it's an easy, enjoyable read.
Really good short story.
Quite a disappointing ending
Interesting short story, seemed over far to quickly. Quite moralistic!
