'There is a Happy Land' was the second of Bezzerides' three novels, and without question the most scarce. Unlike 'Long Haul' and 'Thieves' Market,' his second novel was never reprinted by any of the paperback publishing houses, and was the only one of the author's books never adapted for the big screen. The novel is set in California's San Joaquin Valley, following a family of migrant workers. It has drawn comparisons to Steinbeck's work , and it bears mentioning that the title belies the dark and noirish nature of the story. Drawing on experiences from his own life, Bezzerides accurately portrays the suffering of farmers and migrant workers at the hands of the predatory agribusiness. A neglected but terrific piece of California fiction, and undoubtedly the author's most difficult title.
