Read as part of Nightmares: A New Decade of Modern Horror. The Clay Party is the story of a wagon-train of settlers trying to make their way across America, to California. They are trapped in the mountains during the winter, and this leads to some disturbing acts.I would not particularly label this as horror, but it is creepy nonetheless.
3.5 stars. I had actually previously read this in another anthology.
This is an exceptionally well-written historical horror fiction short story. The ending was very effective and extremely moving.I am leaving a review here because I like to review individual short stories, if I can, and they are listed on GoodReads. As you can see, the author requests this version not be purchased.I found the version of this story I read in "The Best Horror of the Year Volume One", edited by Ellen Datlow, currently available in Kindle format on Amazon for $1.99. Go get it while
'The Clay Party' ends up much like 'The Donner Party' - but there's a supernatural twist.Told in the form of a 'found journal' we first hear about the group of settlers expected in California being disturbingly late - and then we find out about what happened after their leader insisted on taking that ill-advised short cut.(Read in Datlow's 'Nightmares' anthology.)
