The Still Unborn About the Dead

The Still Unborn About the Dead

Nichita Stănescu
0/5 ( ratings)
Nichita Stanescu, one of Romania's foremost contemporary poets, made a deep impression when he read his poems at the Poetry International festival in London, 1971. Born in 1933, he lives in Bucharest where he works for a leading literary journal. His work is already well known through publication in magazines such as `Modern Poetry in Translation'. This representative selection of his poems, the first to appear in English translation in the West, will win many new readers for his complex, often abstract but always challenging poetry. The book contains the whole of his major sequence of poems, `Eleven Elegies', together with a wide selection of his shorter poems which illustrate his poetic diversity. As Petru Popescu, the young Romanian poet, novelist and co-translator of these poems, writes in his Introduction, `In its evocations of childhood, history, myth and the many facets of the "single great life", in its delight in the interaction of words and things, the poetry of Nichita Stanescu is often candid and immaculate as a fairy tale.'
