Healing Waves: A Charity Anthology for Japan

Healing Waves: A Charity Anthology for Japan

5/5 ( ratings)
Last March, when I heard the news of an 8.9 earthquake and seven meter tall tsunami hitting northern Japan near Honshu, my first thought was concern for my daughter-in-law’s relatives. Her father lives in Tokyo, but she has aunts and a grandparent in Osaka in northern Japan. I know very little about Japanese geography. Thankfully none of them were injured or lost homes in the devastation.
Still, my husband and I watched the coverage with horrified fascination. And then the pumps at the Fukushima nuclear reactor failed. We’d lived through Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. The disaster became more and more real to us with each broadcast. Our comfortable life in Oregon seemed precarious. We live in the shadow of Mt Hood, a living volcano on the ring of fire. We have a subduction zone off our coast very similar to the one that shook Japan. What happened across the Pacific Ocean could happen to us.
Nothing can prevent earthquakes and resulting tsunamis. Preparedness and education can reduce the cost in lives.
But that nuclear reactor...?
Our hearts wanted desperately to help. Our heads didn’t know how.
And then M.H. Bonham, publisher of Skywarrior Publishing reminded me that I’d edited a charity anthology for the Gulf Oil Spill the previous year. She had a story in Breaking Waves. Writers contributed material to the project when they couldn’t always afford to send money to the various relief organizations. Readers willingly purchased the anthology and got something in return for their donated dollars. “Let’s do it again!” she said. “Yes,” I agreed with a sigh of relief. I can do that. I can help in a unique way.
And so we offer you Healing Waves an esoteric collection of stories, essays, memoirs, poems and art work. All of the proceeds from e-book sales will go to GlobalGiving or - /projects/japan-earthquake-tsunami-relief/ All of the profits from a print on demand edition will go to the same charity.
So welcome to our anthology and thank you for purchasing it so that we can all help those in need far across the ocean, that isn’t so far away after all.
