Vol 6 of Northlanders starts with the 3 part Siege of Paris. It tells the story of Mads a Viking who is in Seigfried's Army that assaulted Paris in 885 A.D. Strangely, the story has Abbo the monk working WITH the Vikings. I remember reading about Abbo and well that doesn't make much sense. Abbo Cernuus (Crooked) was a Parisian monk who is famous for penning the Wars of the City of Paris-which described the conflict between the Norsemen and Charles the Fat (King of France) and his Marshall Count
I won my first-reads copy of Northlanders Vol.6: Thor's Daughter through Goodreads.I'll start by saying that I realize the title says "and other stories", and that this is the 6th book. But that being said, I was disappointed by how little of the Thor's Daughter story was in this book. The Siege of Paris (part one and two) that begins the book was okay, I found it entertaining enough and was interested in the plot. The Hunter story that follows was a good, I felt it portrayed the struggle of a h...
Another strong outing from this series. I think Brian Wood is slowly building up for me. From this to Local I'm enjoying his style of writing. It's not almost the best but it's almost always willing to try and be different or captivating. So now we get 3 different stories. A one shot called Hunt which is a bout a man hunting a Deer in the icy cold world. We got another story about a daughter of a man who learns she must fight for her right. When her father passes they try to get rid of her but s...
Requires too much recognition of the faces the artist draws, and doesn’t explain what happens.
Actually 3 stories. The first, the 889ad seige of Paris was the best.
Northlanders, Vol. 6: Thor's Daughter and Other Stories is the latest volume in Brian Wood's historical fiction series, Northlanders, and consists of three short stories. It opens with the three part "The Siege of Paris", focusing on a siege gone horribly wrong from the point of view of a professional soldier for hire. The second story, "The Hunt", follows a solitary hunter who's lost everything, his children, his wife, his family as he refuses to lose his current prey regardless of the cost. A
There are three stories in this volume. The first, The Seige of Paris, a perfect illustration of of a futile war, costing thousands of lives and excessive loss of so much on both side, this story is well written. It ends a bit like real life, with survivors doing things they never intended. The second, The Hunt, is a story of Man vs. Nature, which takes the form of a 12 point Buck. He needs the food, the Buck eludes him, yet keeps him close enough to follow easily enough.in pure Scandinavian fashi...
The sixth instalment of Brian Wood’s epic Viking series is a shorter book than the others but no less great. The title story is the weakest of the three stories here. In “Thor’s Daughter”, a clan leader is murdered, his land sold out to a rival leader, but his 14 year old daughter takes his helm and sword and leads his men in the charge against the coming army. The story ends with the advancing ships but I thought it was a well-balanced tale, if somewhat unbelievable. The Hunter is the most prof...
Of the three stories that make up this collection, I am surprised that they chose the final story to draw the title (and therefore collection tone) from. "Thor's Daughter" tells the story of a chieftan's daughter who must step into his shoes after his death - a potentially very interesting story - but it falls somewhat short of my expectations. We're barely introduced to the characters and their conflict before it's resolved, and Wood does't actually tell us how she wins over the men. I actually...
This review (plus Book 7) can be found on my blog: https://graphicnovelty2.com/2018/10/0...The Siege of Paris– The longest of the three stories is set Paris in AD 885 and is based on an actual historical battle that was documented by Monk Abbo Cernuus, a character in this story. Told from the perspective of Danish soldier of fortune Mads, he and the other Viking soldiers prepare for a long siege. Despite only a small army defending Paris, they manage to put off the Viking fleet. Mads is able to
I haven't read a lot of graphic novels and in reading this one, I've discovered a treasure. I will have to look for more of this series, from this publisher. There are three distinct stories in this book, all of them featuring the historical period and locale of Vikings - between 880 and 1000 in years (or thereabouts). These stories have nothing to do with each other, so I will talk about them separately. The Siege of Paris captured my attention and I found myself devouring it, wanting to know how...
Hmm. This kind of needed more work at the writing stage I think. And the art is starting to show a bit of wear and tear.
The creative team tells the long forgotten(?) tale of the King Siegfred's siege of Paris(!) with 1000s od men and many ships, and how the siege was defended against by a few hundred men, all told from the viewpoint of Mads, a foot soldier. Another story which I feel could have been much better told maybe? 7 out of 12
dirty mean and full of misery the northlanders series continues to make graphic novels that are concerned with the simple down to earth average man not heroes of supernatural beings or something else. the drawing is plain and bad the stories stink of excrement and failure. i am not sure why i buy them anyway except that they tell the truth about the dark ages. not the stories that we read in books or watch in movies but real stories as if the writer was by the characters and suffered with them.
Wood has this series down to a fine art. 3 different stories make up this volume: The Hunt, about a hunter and his prey, and the obsession that pushes him and the prey to the brink at the edge of the Arctic Ocean; Thor's Daughter - about a 14-yr old girl, orphaned in the Outer Hebredes and having to fight for herself when no one else will; and Siege of Paris, about, you guessed it, just that.I could tell you about how great the art is and how well done the writing is, but if you're reading this,...
These collections of shorter stories are not often where Northlanders shines its best. While none of the stories here are particularly weak, they pale in comparison to the longer tales. The Siege of Paris is the strongest story here, detailing the titular event and the mercenary who was pivotal in its end. It's got the most brutal art of the series so far, with the siege battles well-presented in deep reds, and intriguing characters like Abbo, the Bishop, and the protagonist Mads, whose duty over...
Another thoroughly forgettable volume in this mostly under-written series. This time around we get another collection of short stories, and in keeping with the other shorts and one-offs from Northlanders, they are given no time to accomplish anything with their narratives, and thus feel pointless. Also, no idea why they chose to title this volume "Thor's Daughter," which is by far the weakest story of the lot, and only a single issue long. I guess because it says "Thor" in it and they're hoping
A fairly disappointing instalment after so much kick ass reading. Not much in the way of excitement and just readable but no real plot driven reason to read.
Three great stories, but this one wasn't my favourite volume of the series. Mostly because of the Siege of Paris, I found the beginning a bit dry and kept putting it down. Although the ending was quite good. My favourite story was definitely The Hunter. I loved looking through the eyes of a man hellbent on killing that deer, even if he had to travel so far from home. I felt like there was also a hint that he doesn't actually have a home and that his family is all dead. Which may be why he is cha...
The sixth trade compilation of Northlanders doesn't disaspoint. The Siege of Paris is a look at an historical event... mind you, I don't know wether it is a factual look or a fictional one... and I don't really care... what I do care about is that it is a good story and left me wanting to find out more about the actual event... something I'm either going to find out thru my local library or from searching this here web-thing.The Hunter is more of a philosophical look at the thought process of a m...
