I picked this book up in the discount bin at Stop and Shop of all places, and was really pleased I did. It's a sweet book that shows an urban black neighborhood, without being about "being black" explicitly. It's also about a boy who is passionate about playing drums, but who also wants a bike to have more freedom, but needs to find a way to come up with the money to do both. I also love the line about him going to the store to buy ear plugs for his grandmother - that was totally for the grown u...
Nice story. Good pictures.
Good message and illustrations. Book was missing CD so I couldn't listen to that.
Little Man loves to play the drums, but he isn't that good. After talking to his dad, Little Man finds the determination to follow his passion. A nice story about practice and dedication, althought the plot was predictable. Includes an audio CD with narration by Dionne Warwick and drum demonstration by co-author David Freeman Wooley.
A dud of a celebrity book
A little preachy....At times a looses steam. Good message. Good illustrations with text.
Story of a determined young boy who wants to earn enough money to purchase a bicycle. I really enjoyed reading a story about a child that didn't even think to ask his parents for the money, just knew he needed to work hard and earn it himself. Such a great example for any spoiled kiddo you might know.
Description: A wonderful story about how a young boy's passion helps him to set a goal and find his purpose in life. The book also comes with a CD that introduces and demonstrates the drums along with an audio of the story.Implementation ideas: K-4th grade music unit to introduce drums and rhythm.
I liked this book, but didn't love it. I'm not sure what the problem was, other than that the reader never gets to know most of the characters who show up in the climactic scenes. Little Man is a good character, determined to do what he loves, but also to get better at it. His father is supportive, in his brief appearance.Perhaps the problem is that it's based on a true story, part of the life of the co-author. He may have been too close to it to see. HE knew the characters, but didn't quite mak...
It seems as though everyone in Little Man's neighborhood has something they're really into, and in his case, it's the drums. But the trouble is that Little Man is only learning to play the drums, and he has a long way to go before he can take his playing public. He does odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a bike so he has a way to the music lessons he wants to take, and when he has the chance to play for the neighborhood block party, that's exactly what he does. This is a sweet story of followi...
