Yvonne, the heroine of the story, is of Anglo-French parents, and she finds life at school very bewildering at first. There is also Jean-Louis, with whom she believes herself to be falling in love.

The story moves from London to Paris and back again, and includes the performance of a play, which ends in disaster for Yvonne, and a dramatic and desperate search for a lost child.
