Ghosts of Lee County, Iowa

Ghosts of Lee County, Iowa

Bruce Carlson
0/5 ( ratings)
So, what are the lights of Fairview Cemetery? Are they our friends and neighbors speaking to us in words we do not understand? Do those lights know of the light in the barrel on the Tracy farm near Keokuk? What of the little un-named girl who drowned in Barlene Creek? Does she know of Annie of Lamalee Creek or J.J. Finnigan? Perhaps there is a community of ghosts within our own, yet not of our own. Whether we se them or not, or understand them, or believe in them; there are those among us who reach out from time long ago. They are the Alyce Shiffs, the Nels Olsens, the Revolutionary War soldiers, and the phantom river boats. They all stir old memories, fire our imaginations and enrich our lives. Deep within the soil of our beautiful Lee County and in the depths of the Old Mississippi River are secrets that we will never fully understand. Perhaps we, by writing and by reading this book, can each touch the lives of those who have gone before us. In doing so, perhaps we can better understand our community and appreciate our heritage.
