If you are ever lost or lonely, call out, speak up, and shout! People just might surprise you. :)Very cute and clever story about trying to fit in, find friends, and your way in a new place.3/4/12
The difficulties of moving and making new friends is explored in this unusual story by Norton Juster and G. Brian Karas. It was a night of G. Brian Karas for us, as we also read Give Me Half!. We enjoyed this story, and while the ending was completely obvious to me, our girls were a bit surprised. We had some fun imagining how Neville would explain himself the next day, but it certainly was a unique way to introduce yourself and get people to remember your name.Since we just read The Phantom Tol...
Everyone knows this author and his famous The Phantom Tollbooth classic. Neville is one of Juster's picture books for children. This one is very sweet and tells about a lonely boy in a new neighborhood and how he makes friends. A unique method if I do say so myself. I'd probably rate this book a 4.5 if this system allowed. The illustrations are wonderful also. Try not to miss this wonderful children's book.
This one might sound crazy to those who cannot relate with it at all. But it is really important to someone like me who struggles a lot in the public.
When a young boy moves to a new house in a new neighborhood, he isn't optimistic about his chances of making new friends. Wandering down his new street, he begins to shout "Neville" as loud as he can, and is soon joined by a number of local children, who add their voices to his. Through question and answer about the mysterious Neville, the boy becomes acquainted with these potential new friends, before heading home...Although best known for his classic children's fantasy novel, The Phantom To...
It's tough to move into a new house in a new neighborhood where you don't know anyone, but Neville finds a unique way to meet people in the neighborhood. A delight!
I wish I had read this as a kid after we moved.
I love Norton Juster's writing, and this is such a good concept underlying a story about moving and making new friends. There are ideas in here about finding one's voice and losing assumptions, in an unexpected way. However, as a few others have noted in reviews, there is concern for what will happen tomorrow in Neville's world. If you've been around children, or have been a child yourself and remember, kids expect truth, and can dish out harsh treatment to those who bend it, or even abstain fro...
Ok, I had mixed feelings about this story. A boy moves to a new neighborhood and is worried about making friends. The book overall shows that making new friends is not as hard as you might think. SPOILER - the main character Neville goes to the end of the street and yells out his name. Before you know it serval kids come out to help find Neville. The Story goes on with the kids calling out Neville’s name through out the neighborhood until it get’s dark and the kids have to go to bed. All the kid...
Adorbs. Seriously. And how could it not be? Did you peep the author? Yup. The one and only. I couldn’t believe it, either..For the newly arrived, just pulled up to the curb crowd searching for a friend, you’re in luck. This one’s for you..For the ones who have been safely ensconced in their cocoons, who have never known the butterflies that flutter in your tummy when you are forced to introduce yourself to complete strangers, this one’s for you, too..We all have a place...both coming and going.....
A family moves to another neighbourhood, but the boy isn't happy about it. He has no friends there. When he goes for a walk he begins calling out the name Neville. Before long many children from the neighbourhood join him to help find Neville. Clever story.
A little boy is new in town. His mother suggests he goes for a walk around the neighborhood and see who he meets. He thinks it's a silly idea but tries it anyway and much to his surprise does find that one can find new friends just by putting yourself out there ... literally, in this instance!Cute story with neat illustrations done in muted colors that strangely stir up nostalgia lol
A funny concept but it didn't seem completely thought through. Also I fear what will happen when (spoiler) the neighborhood kids find out Neville was yelling his own name, not his "friend's" name. Text could have used a bit more editing as the story gets off to a slow start and Neville seems a bit of a jerk. I don't think these are things that young readers would miss.
Can we save clever? A kid is absolutely devastated by having to move. When he finally walks to the end of his street and calls out, "Neville?" Another kid joins him and then more, oil everyone is shouting out for Neville. No show. They finally need to go home, but promise to return tomorrow to continue searching. As mom puts her boy to bed, she whispers, "Good night, Neville, pleasant dreams."
