The Story of Mount Desert Island

The Story of Mount Desert Island

Samuel Eliot Morison
0/5 ( ratings)
Library of Congress Card Catalog #60-9352

In 1961 the permanent settlement of Mount Desert Island was two centuries old, and the Island had paseed through many phases before becoming the nucleus of the Acadia National Park. Prior to settlement, there are stories of Champlain's discovery and naming of the Island in 1604, of Madame de Guercheville's short-lived mission, and the grant to the self-styled Sieur de Cadillac. And behind the first visits of Europeans, archaeologists have found records of occupations by Native Americans for about five thousand years.

These rather random notes were gathered over the many years the author enjoyed summers at Northeast Harbor. There were put together for an informal lecture for the benefit of the Island libraries in July 1959. Other data have been added, in order to make a permanent record.
