Memoirs of the Prodigal the Road to "Fifteen Years in Prison and Beyond"; is an ispirational saga of one man's spiritual odyssey . . . an epic tale of his Christian upbringing, his fall from grace, his quest for redemption and ultimately his spiritual Resurrection. It's a powerful message of hope and triumph through obedient faith in the Word of God. The author, John C. Dortch, is a man whose humble beginnings are deeply rooted in a childhood and young adult life that were punctuated with promises of extraordinary life-time achievements. He was born on July 19, 1945, his mother's birthday, the youngest of four children, and the son of a Baptist minister, who only had the benefit of an eighth grade education. Despite being a scholar athlete, a Howard University graduate, a U.S. Army Officer, decorated Vietnam veteran, and top agent for New York Life Ins. Co., his life went spiraling out of control. He had lost his way. John's mother, Julia, shares anh incredible experience that she had during her pregnancy with him. She recalls that one hight as he lay awake, resting quietly in the dark, in the fornt bedroom of the family's home, a sphere of light, like a miniature moon, came orbiting through the window, revolving on its axis. Too frighten to move, she watched in awe as the light touched her stomach, and then, just as it had miraculously entered, it exited the window. Being a devout Christian, Julia was convinced that herr vision was a Divine omen that John would be graced with a very special mission in life, that he had been chosen to withness and to minister to others. Twenty-nine years later, John would have the identical vcision as he lay in his bunk in a dark jail cell, awaiting transfer to a maximum security federal penitentiary to serve a life sentence for murder. John's revelation was the beginning of a spiritual odyssey that would not only transform his life, but would also have a profound impact on the lives of others whom he would encounter along his life's journey. In fulfillment of his mother's prophecy, John became a powerful witness of the unconditional love of Jesus Christ and the all-sufficiency of His redeeming grace. After serving fifteen years in prison, John was paroled and returned to Washington, DC, where he went to work as the business manager for Covenant Baptist Church. A year and a half later, he enrolled in the District of Columbia School of Law. After graduating law school, he passed bar examinations in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and West Virginia. Later he served as an adjunct professor of Juvenile Justice at the Institute for Public Safety and Justice at the University of the District of Columbia; as Executive Director of the Time Dollar Youth Court, a diversion program for first-time juvenile offenders, and later as the Executive Director of the Violence Free Zone Demonstration Initiative at the National Center for Neighborhood Enterprises. During an appearance on the Today Show with Katie Couric, John vowed to dedicate his life in service to those in need. After his mother's death, he returned to his hometown to restore the family's residence and to reconnect with community where he grew up. He reinstated his membership in the historic First African Baptist Church of Beaufort, South Carolina , first becoming and ordained deacon and is now an ordained minister. Most of his time is now devoted to ministering to the elderly in various ways. Upon reflection, John would later muse that, from a spiritual perspective, his time in prison has been, perhaps, the most illuminating period in his life. Other than assisting the elderly, his other competing passions are advocating for at-risk youths, ex-offenders, and veterans suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. John emphatically, proclaims, "We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers!"
