Tee finds himself standing alone on the Texas prairie on an evening in 1859 when the stars look close enough to touch.Now wouldn't it be something if I reached up there and picked a handful of those stars and sprinkled them in Lela's hair.Nine years ago Tee promised Lela he would honor her decision to marry Charlie Haskell, but his heart was never party to the promise.Since that day he has drifted around the Mississippi River country and now finds himself, and his brother Jim, station keepers for The Butterfield Overland Mail at Clear Fork Station .When Tee and Jim arrive at their station they find nothing but a bare gravel hill. They soon learn that two Indian Reservations surround them, and where there aren't Indians there are bad men, rustlers, and vigilantes.
