Born
March 28 1960
Jessé José Freire de Souza is a sociologist, university professor and Brazilian researcher who works in the areas of Social Theory, Brazilian Social Thought and theoretical / empirical studies on inequality and social classes in contemporary Brazil. He is the author of the books 'A Ralé Brasileira', A Radiografia do Golpe', 'A Elite do Atraso' and 'A Classe Média no Espelho'.

Graduated in Law from the University of Brasília , he completed his Master's degree in Sociology from the same institution in 1986. In 1991, he obtained a PhD in Sociology from the Karl Ruprecht Universität Heidelberg , where he obtained free teaching and PhD in the same discipline at the Universität Flensburg in 2006. He also did postdoctoral studies in Sociology at the New School for Social Research, New York, .

From 2009, Souza undertook sociological research across the country to confront the thesis that a "new middle class" had emerged in the country. The result was the configuration of new nomenclature, namely, "ralé", "batalhadores", "classe média" and "elite", the latter two having privileges that the first two do not have.

He wrote and organized 22 books in Portuguese, English and German on political sociology, peripheral modernization theory, and inequality in contemporary Brazil. He is currently a full professor of political science at the Fluminense Federal University, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro.

On April 2, 2015, he was appointed by the Presidency of the Republic to the position of president of the Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada - Ipea , formerly occupied by Sergei Suarez Dillon Soares, but resigned in 2016 shortly after Vice President Michel Temer temporarily took over presidency.

The importance of the scientific production of Jessé de Souza to different fields of study in Brazil, mainly to sociology, is important in the discussion of expensive subjects, both for the political, social, economic and cultural spheres, and for the academy that produces knowledge who aspire to disclose content not given to them.

He is currently writing articles for Carta Capital magazine.
