Ruthie has been sailing through the halcyon days of her second marriage. Dean is everything she ever wanted in a partner and twenty years her senior. Now in her sixties and feeling the shadow of entering her husband's final years, she is awakened one morning to a phone call from Sven, a beloved college friend who contracted AIDS after graduation. But as Dean declines and Sven's health deteriorates, the letters become lifelines as she is forced to face the reality of both love and loss.
