Dear Sven

Dear Sven

Sally McClellan
0/5 ( ratings)
Ruthie has been sailing through the halcyon days of her second marriage. Dean is everything she ever wanted in a partner and twenty years her senior. Now in her sixties and feeling the shadow of entering her husband's final years, she is awakened one morning to a phone call from Sven, a beloved college friend who contracted AIDS after graduation. It turns out he isn't entirely the man she remembers. Her past drinking buddy, dancing partner, and sometime lover has been living in an abbey in the Midwest, preparing to take final vows.

Excited to reconnect, Ruthie begins a series of letters to Sven reveling in old memories. She also writes of her own tumultuous past. Throughout, she returns to the beauty and mystery of the natural world which sustains her, and to God, the subject of an unfinished conversation she and Sven started long ago. Initially, Ruthie's letters brim with humor and a renewed sense of curiosity and passion. But as Dean declines and Sven's health deteriorates, the letters become lifelines as she is forced to face the reality of both love and loss.
