I felt like Paul Auster's stamp of approval would be a good sign, and you can tell -- most of these are Auster-type stories, the kind with questions of coincidence and fate. And some of them are wonderful, and they would be great stories of the sort you would hear at a dinner party. But the thing is, it doesn't work as a volume. Too many coincidences crammed into one book exhausts the mind. Furthermore, the format of it would be better suited to radio rather than literature -- but I should inser...
This is the perfect book to read before bed, because you can read it in tiny chunks, but it's also the worst book to read before bed, because you think, "just one more tiny chunk! Look how tiny!" and then you've read 30 more and it's 2 a.m. I love this book. It's hard to believe that there are so many magical moments occurring in people's lives, but hell, I want to believe it.
In 2003 I bought a copy of True Tales of American Life, edited and introduced by Paul Auster. The copy was second hand and was inscribed on the title pageTo Fluffykins BunnyLove from the Rabbit with Medium Sized earsxxxI wondered who these creeps were. I tried reading the book and got bogged down around page 50 because it turned out that the true tales were all two pages long and relating wildly improbably co-incidences to which the only possible reaction was "oh yeah? you don't say so" with one...
I'd never heard of this book before or of NPR's National Story Project. The book contains about a hundred recollections by people around the country of moments that impacted their lives or memories that they still think about years later. Each story ranges from a single paragraph or two to three pages. While some of the stories fall flat, most are interesting and some are incredibly insightful, painful, funny, etc. The extent of the fascinating stories that people from all around the country sub...
Collected stories from a show Auster ran on NPR. Real folks telling real stories with an extraordinary twist, these were the only qualifications. Lends narrative credence to the fact that people are endlessly varied and endlessly fascinating. Highly highly recommended.
I Thought My Father Was God and Other True Tales from NPR's National Story Project = True Tales of American Life, Paul Auster True Tales of American Life (First published under the title: I Thought My Father Was God, and Other True Tales from NPR's National Story Project) (2001). The true-life stories in this unique collection provide "a window into the American mind and heart" (The Daily News). One hundred and eighty voices - male and female, young and old, from all walks of life and all over t...
Brilhante!
This is easily one of the best and most worthwhile short story collections I have ever read. My favourite categories were Slapstick, Strangers and Dreams. My least favourite was the concluding one, Reflections (some were a bit too free-form for my taste), but even so I can’t see myself giving this less than five stars. This collection reinforces one thing: no matter who you are or where you come from, everyone has a story to tell, one that is worth sharing. The harsh reality that is portrayed in
Collection of true stories submitted by NPR listeners. Many of them are stranger-than-fiction episodes (which Paul Auster obviously has a penchant for) and make for a good bedtime read. There were a handful of stories that left an impression deep enough to make me want to jot down the story synopsis, but apparently not deep enough for me to remember when I failed to actually write them down :p Except for one. There was this story, towards the very end of the book, about a woman in her 60s who wh...
This is a very intriguing volume containing 180 true stories submitted by radio listeners for NPR's National Story Project. I love the idea of the book, which is organized by grouping stories according to the following themes: animals, objects, families, slapstick, strangers, war, love, death, dreams, and meditations. Some of the stories are masterfully written, some less so. The stories are so short that if one doesn't hold appeal, the next is just a page or two away.
I am generally not a huge fan of short stories, particularly collections by different authors. However, I loved this book. It is all very short stories, supposedly true, told by real people. They cover a wide range of emotions and there were only a couple that I didn't enjoy. I'd highly recommend this book.
