The Lion of Venice

The Lion of Venice

Richard Cusden
0/5 ( ratings)
Tintoretto's studio in Renaissance Venice is a highly acclaimed, and particularly busy, workshop, producing paintings for palaces and churches on the orders of senators and doges. It is little wonder then that the Maestro's chosen apprentice, Giovanni, flourishes, with time to rival and even better his master's work. Giovanni, adoptive son and true friend of Tintoretto, develops under expert tutelage, not only in his chosen artistic field, but as a respected and morally astute member of Venetian society. But with intense intellect and talent there comes a profoundly dangerous awareness of life's imperfections, an awareness that threatens to obliterate any notion of beauty that Giovanni may have held, both spiritually and physically. His questioning nature drags his soul to the very peak of understanding, only to plummet to desperate lengths as a result of what he comes to appreciate. Unconditional love might possibly save him, but only to the same extent that it might ruin him.
