Erika Weihs was a painter who was schooled in Austria and came to the U.S. in 1940. She lived and worked mostly in New York City. She is the illustrator of over 30 books for children and the author and illustrator of Count the Cats.

Weihs earned her degree in 1937 from the Graphische Lehr und Versuchanstalt in Vienna and attended the Leonardo da Vinci Art School in New York. In 1942, she married Kurt Weihs, an artist and illustrator. They had two children.

She had exhibits at the Whitney Museum and the Carnegie Institute. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of the City of New York, the New York Historical Society, the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Museum and Rutgers University.

Weihs was a member of the National Association of Women Artists, the American Society of Contemporary Artists and the Audubon Society.
