Frederic R. Gruger . He signed as "F.R. Gruger."

A classic illustrator from the Golden Age of American illustration, he was admired for his rich tonal values, passion, and imagination valued over straightforward reportage. He began as a newspaper artist for the Philadelpia Ledger and illustrated the first cover for the new Saturday Evening Post in 1898, and during his 45-year career with that magazine produced more than 3,000 illustrations. Vanity fair ranked him as one of the eight greatest illustrators in 1916. His works also appeared in more than 20 other publications. Time named him Dean of American Illustrators" in 1939. The soft cardboard he used for his illustrations became known as "Gruger board."
