Curtis Hoffmeister

4.6/5 ( ratings)
Curtis Hoffmeister hails from Wildwood, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis that has no werewolf pack – yet. By day he is a pharmacist, by night a horror writer, ice hockey player and blues guitarist. Think about that combination the next time you get a prescription filled.

The Robert Benoit novels are essentially cop books with fur and fangs. Curt grew up around cops; his father was a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officer, as were both next-door neighbors. Policemen from various departments were constantly around the house, it seemed. Though not destined to follow Dad's career path, that law enforcement mentality still seeped into Curt. It's in his blood. The Benoit Series books therefore are pretty simple: bad guys who do harm to innocent people will be pursued relentlessly and brought to justice, one way or another. It's just that, in Benoit's universe, some of those bad guys are supernatural beings. And so is Robert Benoit.

There will also be stories set in that same universe which feature the other characters, especially Detective Kimberly Hawkins and master vampire Desirée Le Gallienne. The tone of the writing changes depending on the protagonist. Desirée has a completely different "voice" than Benoit, for example. Her tales will often be historical in nature. As for Hawkins - well, Kim is human, so her viewpoint will reflect that.

Other kinds of stories will sometimes appear under Curtis Hoffmeister's name. Not everything he writes can be called horror. You'll see the odd spy thriller or erotic tale, or maybe a straight-up police story with only a small supernatural twist. Who knows, one day he might actually write something about a character who is a pharmacist.
